Merritt Brown, long time resident of Estes Park, passed away on June 3, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California. Merritt was a junior high teacher for 31 years in San Jose before retiring. He taught Social Studies and French. During the 1980’s, he was popular for taking groups of students and parent chaperones to Fisherman’s Wharf, on overnight field trips to the Gold Rush country and to Los Angeles to see the King Tut exhibit. One former student of his remembers him this way: “Mr. Brown was an exceptional teacher, it wasn't until I got to college that I found other history professors that I felt were on par with him... I remember he loved history and made it fun for Jr High kids... Mr. Brown was not only an excellent teacher, but a good man and fine mentor -- so kind and PATIENT, which are rare and special qualities for junior high teachers.” It was always Merritt’s dream to retire in the Rocky Mountains. He had started visiting Estes Park when he was doing graduate work at CU in Boulder (before he was married). He married Margaret Dodds in Berkley, California in 1962. They lived in San Jose, California for 32 years where they raised a family. Before moving to Estes Park in 1995, they visited several times and got to know some of the locals. During their years in Estes Park, they enjoyed new friendships beginning with the Newcomers Club. Late last year, health concerns brought them back to California to be near their children Michelle Brown, Quinton Brown and Stephanie Hood. A memorial service is planned for August 6 in San Jose at South HIlls Community Church. Memorial donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
